The men’s tennis team is currently ranked first in the MIAA Conference after a 2-0 start to the season. They are 7-2 overall.

The tennis team shutout Ripon College and Wisconsin Lutheran College before spring break. They then traveled to Florida and went 2-2 in the sunshine state.

The Knights lost to the Royals of Bethel University 8-1 and to the Quakers of Earlham College 6-2. First-year student Jason Wolters recorded Calvin’s lone victory against the Royals at No. 5 singles.

On March 30, Calvin traveled to Spring Arbor, Mich. and defeated the Cougars of Spring Arbor University 5-4. The Knights won No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches and No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles to spring ahead of the Cougars. Sophomore David Brown and Wolters recorded victories in both singles and doubles matches.

In their first conference match and home opener, the Knights hosted the Britons of Albion College. In every match, with the exception of the No. 5 singles, the men’s tennis team defeated Albion.

Most recently Calvin traveled to play against Olivet College. The team started off very strong, winning all their doubles matches. They continued to play very well as senior Matt Buesing won the No. 1 singles match against a very tough opponent, Olivet’s Max Grabel, and sophomore Matt VanWinkle won the No. 2 singles match.

Calvin continued to play well throughout the competition and ended up winning every match against Olivet. After defeating Olivet 9-0, the Knights clinched their second victory in the MIAA.

“It was a nice conference road win,” said head coach John Ross. “Matt Buesing in particular had a nice win at No. 1 singles against a good opponent with strong ground strokes.”

The team will host Concordia University on April 11 for a non-conference match up. The games will start at 5 p.m.
