The all male a cappella group The Filharmonic played an energetic show in the CFAC Wednesday night. The Filharmonic, whose name references the members’ Filipino heritage, is composed of Joe, VJ, Niko, Trace, Barry and Jules.
Famous for appearing in NBC’s “The Sing-Off” and “Pitch Perfect 2,” the group took the stage with aggressive energy.
The Filharmonic opened with a medley of recent pop songs before taking it back a few years with Bruno Mars’ “Treasure,” which is the first song that they performed live on “The Sing-Off.”
Later in the evening, the group slowed things down with their own rendition of “Flashlight,” the original song written for “Pitch Perfect 2.” During the cover, the audience lit up the flashlights on their phones and sang along.
Throughout their performance, the group encouraged the audience to get involved by dancing and singing along, to which the audience gladly obliged.
The boys were obviously overjoyed by the level of audience participation and mentioned how grateful they were to perform in front of such a loving and passionate group of students.
One of the highlights from the show included a beatbox battle between The Filharmonic’s two resident oral musicians. Another standout moment came when the group sang a song in their native Filipino language, a moment which excited the Filipino students in attendance.
Calvin’s very own male a cappella club, uKnighted, opened for The Filharmonic. The group, which formed last year, was surprisingly polished. They performed a wide range of songs from traditional American folk songs, to some oldies and a barbershop quartet tune.
Overall, both groups impressed with high energy, impressive vocal ranges and energetic audience interaction which got the crowd laughing and singing along to the music.
