Summer is right around the corner, which means our movie theaters will be filled to the brim with the biggest, flashiest blockbusters that studios can throw at us.
The months of May through August are traditionally known as “blockbuster season” to the film industry, which can be both a wonderful and overwhelming feeling.
But in a summer featuring the return of “Jurassic Park,” “Terminator” and Pixar, it’s hard to not be excited. As you pick and choose the movies you go to see this season with friends and family, here’s a short list of what to expect.
With “Avengers: Age of Ultron” already kicking off the month of May, plenty of other big movies will have to fight for some love and attention. But they won’t have to fight hard.
On May 15 the release of “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2” will likely be fan favorites. The latter sequel is a follow up to a surprise hit, and the former is a sequel decades after the original hit theaters, with Tom Hardy taking over for Mel Gibson.
Memorial Day weekend will be the release of the horror classic from 1982, “Poltergeist,” as well as Disney’s new live action, sci-fi adventure starring George Clooney, “Tomorrowland.”
The month of May will then close with the release of Dwayne Johnson’s new action-thriller about a rescue chopper pilot in the middle of the world’s largest earthquakes, called “San Andreas.”
June kicks off with a bang with a handful of films from all different genres. The cast of the hit HBO show “Entourage” is back together for a long awaited movie.
Melissa McCarthy re-teams with her “Bridesmaids” director, Paul Feig, and joins Jason Statham and Jude Law to create “Spy.” Horror fans also have “Insidious Chapter 3” to keep them satisfied.
On June 12, one of the summer’s most anticipated films, “Jurassic World,” hits theaters. This fourth entry in the “Jurassic Park” franchise promises to recapture the magic of the original and stars current Hollywood golden boy Chris Pratt.
Pixar is bringing joy to theaters this year by releasing two films in 2015. The first will be “Inside Out,” a story about the emotions in our head, which will be released on June 19.
Fourth of July weekend’s biggest release is “Terminator Genisys.” This new “Terminator” story brings back Arnold Schwarzenegger to the role that made him a household name back in the 1980s and brings new cast members to the film, including “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke.
For families, the “Despicable Me” spin-off “Minions” will be centered around everyone’s favorite little yellow creatures. Later in the month, Marvel brings out their second film of the summer, “Ant-Man.”
Judd Apatow comes back to the director’s chair to bring comedian Amy Schumer to the big screen in “Trainwreck.” And no summer would be complete without the release of a Woody Allen film. His latest, “Irrational Man,” stars Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, and will be released on July 17.
Finally, we come to August. This is known as the driest month of the summer for movies, but there are still a couple to anticipate.
August 7 is the release of the long awaited reboot of “Fantastic Four,” and director Guy Richie brings an adaptation of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” to the big screen with “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill.
These and many more will be coming to a theater near you this summer.
