The men’s golf team finished fifth in the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The team started the tournament on the wrong foot. Calvin was tied for seventh place with Hope at the end of the first day of competition. But on Saturday, the Knights shot 10 strokes better than the day before. They finished one stroke behind Alma for fourth place.
On Friday, seniors Ben Kuiper and Dave Sarkipato, juniors Ross Ryzenga and Jake Hoogstrate, sophomores James Van Noord and Mike Wierenga and freshman Justin Crow all shot par on the 10th hole to start off the back nine.
Kuiper led the Knights with a 76 on the par 70 course, Sarkipato and Ryzenga shot 78. Van Noord and Wierenga shot 81 and 84 respectively, for a team total of 313 on the day.
On Saturday, Sarkipato led the team with a 74, Kuiper and Wierenga shot 75s, Ryzenga and Van Noord shot 77s. Calvin finished with a combined two day score of 614, putting them in fifth place.
Kuiper tied for 19th individually. Sarkipato was close behind tied for 21st. Ryzenga, Van Noord and Wierenga finished tied for 28th, tied for 41st and tied for 45th respectively.
The Knights next competition is on Saturday, Sept. 8 in Kalamazoo at 1 p.m.
