Letter from Handlon Campus: My experience as a freshman at my convocation

On Sept. 5 2023 at convocation here in Handlon, I was honored to begin this journey of thinking deeply, acting justly and living wholeheartedly as Christ’s agent of renewal in the world. My experience as a freshman was overall wonderful. I had the opportunity to speak with people that I would normally not be able to communicate with.

One such person was the director of the Michigan Department of Corrections, Heidi Washington. I was able to thank her for allowing a livestream of my sister’s memorial service. It is not easy to mourn in prison, especially when starting college at the same time. My sister’s funeral was in the middle of my first week of classes.

I cannot think of any better way to honor my sister than to earn a degree from Calvin University. For me, I aim to become Christ’s agent of renewal in every situation, starting in my bereavement. My sister is now with Jesus. She may no longer be here on earth and her loss is certainly felt; however, I have gained a family with Calvin.

Respectfully,

Brian Dwight Peterson
