Four Calvin student athletes achieved the honor of MIAA player of the week in their respective sports this past week. Derrick DeVries (senior; basketball), Tanya Visser (junior; track and field), Gabby Timmer (sophomore; basketball), and Jayvin Wolfe (senior; track and field) all achieved this honor.

DeVries was named not only the MIAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, but also to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week. He achieved these honors for his performances in a win against Olivet, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, in addition to a win against rival Hope College, where he had another double-double with 35 points and 12 rebounds.

Visser was named the MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for indoor track and field. While competing at the North Central Invitational, Visser placed second in the shot put with a career-high throw of 40 feet, and placed 16th in the weight throw with another career-high toss of 41 feet, 4 ¼ inches. These performances helped the women’s track and field team place sixth at the invitational.

Timmer was named MIAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her play against St. Mary’s, where she scored 25 points and had 9 rebounds, and for her 15-point, 6-rebound performance against Olivet, leading her team to victories in both contests.

Wolfe was named MIAA Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for indoor track and field. He reached this achievement through his performances at the North Central Invitational in Illinois. He placed seventh in shot put with his season-best throw of 44 feet, 5 ½ inches and proceeded to place ninth in the weight throw with a season-best throw of 44 feet, 7 inches. These performances propelled the men’s track and field team to place sixth at the invitational.
