Swimming & diving having continued success

The men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both placed third at the Calvin Winter Invite this past Saturday, Dec. 2.

Ben Holstege, Julian Iturbe, Max DeYoung and Jared Britton claimed third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Knights also had a successful start at the 200-yard medley relay, clocking at 1:30.06, a record-tying achievement from Ben Holstege, Tanner Vincent, Jared Britton and Jacob Lensing.

Furthermore, Britton placed fourth for the the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.80 seconds, and Iturbe placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.44, the fourth fastest time in Calvin’s history.

Colin Murphy came in 12th place, the fastest of Calvin’s team, for the 200-yard backstroke, timed at 1:59.67.

The men’s team excelled in the 200-yard freestyle relay time trial, with a record of 1:22.18—almost 15 seconds faster than the NCAA B-Cut time—accomplished by Holstege, Lensing, DeYoung and Britton.

The women’s team also did exceptionally well, competing against seven other schools and claiming third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the team comprising of Madelyn Smith, Anna Serino, Rachel Mattson and Abby Van Harn at 3:29.52. The Knights placed fifth in the 200-yard medley relay with Daniella Sugijanto, Hannah Chao, Jenna Oezer and Abby Van Harn, touching the wall at 1:46.68, the fastest record of an NCAA III team at the Calvin Winter Invite.

In addition, Abby Van Harn came in second for the 100-yard freestyle with a Calvin record of 50.68.

Hannah Chao took fourth place for the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.10 and fourth place for the 200-yard individual medley at 2:10.06.

The women’s team, comprised of Emily Gunderson, Rachel Mattson, Madelyn Smith and Abby Van Harn, set a new school record and a NCAA B-Cut time at 1:33.84 for the 200-yard freestyle relay time trial.

Head coach Dan Gelderloos said of the results: “I am kind of mind blown. I am somewhat speechless; I am just in utter awe of what the team was able to do. It was fun to sit back and watch this unfold. To see their hard work come to fruition. We did some absolutely phenomenal things this weekend.”
