Knights of Calvin: Ethyan Robles
Year: Junior
Sport: Rugby
Major: Film and Media and Business Minor
Chimes: Could you introduce yourself?
Nobles: I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lived in Ohio most of my life. Moved to Illinois. From Illinois, I lived in Singapore and picked [Rugby] up there. Decided to keep it up in college. I figured Calvin had a good rugby team anyway. In high school I played wing and fullback. Right now, I play Eight. I can play other positions, too, but right now I’m sticking there.
Chimes: What got you into rugby?
Nobles: I was still playing football at the time. Most of the football players were playing rugby at the same time. Being close to New Zealand and Australia, rugby was a big sport in Singapore. There is some really competitive rugby played there. It was the hot sport at my school. I love contact sports, so, yeah, I wanted to try it.
Chimes: How do you feel about this season?
Nobles: I’ve had a great year. A lot of our players have had great years, especially our junior class. We are losing a lot of seniors soon, which makes up 50 percent of our starting lineup. We showed a lot of promise as juniors this year. This year has been a little bit rough. We lost a game we could have won. There are things we could have done differently. Two other disheartening losses. We’ve got some solid new players this year, who we can build into some really great players. We have some people that haven’t played in awhile. They’re learning quick and they’re playing well, so, can’t complain. No matter what happens this year, I’m happy. We have a great team and great players. I will be looking forward to going to the playoffs.
Chimes: Did you play any other sports at the time?
Nobles: Football and track in high school. I’ve played soccer in the past. I ran track. Wasn’t record-breaking. For football, I wasn’t gonna play at some D1 school, in all honesty. In Zurich, they didn’t have a school team, they just had a league for football, since it’s Europe and American football isn’t big there. We went to play a tournament in Paris; and after that, I was like, yeah, I want to keep playing rugby.
Chimes: What kind of activities did you enjoy outside of sports?
Nobles: Making music. I play the violin recreationally. I like to write songs. I like to produce instrumentals. Obviously being a film guy, I like to do film stuff. Write scripts and produce videos in my off time. Being with friends, being a social person, that’s big. Mostly that — being socially active.
Chimes: What made you choose Calvin?
Nobles: My sister went here. [I] did a summer program and said, yeah, I’ll go to Calvin. Considered transferring, but I didn’t.
Chimes: Where do you see yourself 10 years?
Nobles: In Los Angeles, in the film industry. Making my own films. Produce and release them.
Chimes: Who is your role model?
Nobles: I don’t really have a role model. My dad … maybe. Lebron James, probably. Tom Brady, at times. That’s all I can think of right now.
Chimes: What’s your favorite film and why?
Nobles: “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It’s a mind trip. First time you watch it, you’ll be mentally incapacitated because you won’t understand what you watched. It’s really the essence of what a film should be in it’s truest form. You’ll do an analysis of everything. The cinematic elements, the visuals, I think untouched. It was made in the late 1960s, and no movie has been untouched since.
