Calvin men’s soccer clinches MIAA title
The Calvin men’s soccer team beat Alma College 6-0 on Tuesday night on home ground, thereby securing the MIAA title for the eleventh consecutive year.
This secured victory added to the Knights’ record of 14-0-1. In MIAA standings, they stand at 10-0-1, with three conference matches left in the regular season.
The Knights took control of the game, scoring six goals in total while denying the Scots from scoring any.
Two minutes into the game, sophomore Jacob Lyon capitalized on a corner kick taken by Matt Hinds. Not five minutes later, sophomore Bobby McCaw scored another goal on a corner kick taken by Hinds again.
The third goal was scored halfway into the first half by senior Francisco Jay Noyola. At the end of the half, Calvin had shot nine times more than Alma, and had 12 corner kicks while Alma had 3.
The Knights regained momentum in the second half, with junior Trent Vegter scoring in the first minute of the second half off a corner kick. Soon after, junior Hunter Olsen scored off a pass from Weldy, making it the fifth goal of the game.
The last goal was scored by Ian Adams off a rebound shot in the last 10 minutes of the game, concluding the match with a score of 6-0.
“We were really good in the final third, under pressure to give us those set piece opportunities. We had a lot of good build-up to create those. We talked about set pieces all week. Credit to our guys for being big, physical and hungry in the box — both offensively and defensively — to finish those chances tonight,” said Coach Souders.
With a record of 109-15-7, Souders has yet to concede the MIAA title, winning six consecutive titles in the six years he has been the head coach of the men’s soccer team.
Calvin had been picked as a favorite in the 2017 MIAA preseason coaches’ poll, with Alma expected to come in second.
The Knights previously faced Alma College this season in late September. The game ended in a 5-0 victory in an away game for the Knights.
The Knights play against Kalamazoo for an away game this Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
