LifeWork is a brand-new program offered by the Career Center which allows students to participate in job-like situations and help them acquire skills needed to succeed in the workforce. Calvin LifeWork puts students through various assignments like building resumes and securing internships.

Students interested in learning more about LifeWork and the services it offers should stop by the interactive touch-screen display outside the Career Center. The screen displays graphics and menus that allow students to explore  an overview of the program similar to the one featured on the program’s webpage and find answers to frequently asked questions at any time.

The LifeWork structure is broken down into four different stages of development corresponding to the four years students traditionally spend in college.

In the first year, Discover, students explore their interests and find career paths that fit with those interests.

Students in the second year of LifeWork will begin to Equip. Students will use what they have learned during their first year and apply it to their career field through interview and resume training and other activities.

Coaches will help students learn real-life job skills such as how to take leadership roles, lead a presentation to a board,  and understanding how social media plays into their job search.

Year three is all about Experience. It is considered to be the pivotal stage of the LifeWork program. Students will experience their career field first-hand through an internship or job.

The last year is called Launch. This is when a student will finish their resume and “launch” the start of their career.

If students complete the first three years and commit to a fourth year, they’ll receive a$3,000 scholarship for their senior year.

During an informational meeting on Tuesday Sept. 19, Ron Blue, a personal finance expert and founder of Kingdom Advisors, explained that the Calvin LifeWork program will emulate Indiana Wesleyan University’s Ronald Blue Institutes version.

Blue has a vision to incorporate principles of biblical money-management into the LifeWork program. He commented on concerns some students face about material success in connection to questions about career and the future.

“Materialism is the biggest problem college students have,” mentioned Blue. He spoke to how this program will train the heart to know what is enough. This program will look at the biblical view of money. Blue wants to combine the language of Wall Street with the language of the Bible.

“Read the Bible and be content,” said Blue. “But practicing all of this takes major discipline.”

LifeWork is the future of Calvin and President Leroy is excited to start this part of the future with current students.

Students who wish to participate in LifeWork here at Calvin should download the app or contact the Career Center.
