In their non-conference meet Friday night at Division II Wayne State University, the men and women’s swim and dive teams were unable to overcome the D-II athletes. The Calvin men fell 159-77, while the Calvin women were defeated by a 149-89 score.
Despite their defeat, the women were able to win quite a few events. Sophomore Kathryn Wrobel won the 1,650 meter freestyle with a time of 18:02.50, while freshman Michaela Rookus won the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:09.50. In the relay events, Calvin’s 200 meter freestyle relay team of senior Rachel Colasurdo, senior Elizabeth Counsell, freshman Leah Meyer and Wrobel were able to pull of the win with a time of 1:43.91.
The men also pulled of several wins in their events. Freshman Aaron Venema captured a win in the 1,650 meter freestyle with a time of 16:52.76. Sophomore Travis Vincent also was able to get the win for the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:04.49. For the men’s relays, Calvin’s 200 meter freestyle relay team of Venema, freshman Brandon Muma, freshman Tyler Ligon and sophomore Alex Baumann got the win with a time of 1:31.33.
In spite of their recent loss, both teams will now heavily prepare to host their own Calvin Winter Invitational from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.
