Chimes will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.

The start of interim has been delayed from Wednesday to Thursday to allow students to travel safely during record-breaking low temperatures this week.

This is according to an email to students from provost Claudia Beversluis at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.

The college will also shut down today at 2 p.m. and is scheduled to open again on Wednesday, according to the email.

“Please do not drive to Calvin College for the beginning of interim if you feel unsafe or if the weather conditions in your area prohibits safe driving,” Beversluis wrote in the email. “Listen to your weather conditions and those of your approaching route.”

It was not immediately clear whether the canceled day of class will be made up at another time.

Other colleges across West Michigan, including Hope College, Aquinas College, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University and Cornerstone University were closed today and some have already canceled classes for tomorrow and Wednesday.

Despite the weather and closings across the city, Calvin remained open this morning.

The January Series is still scheduled to begin on Wednesday, despite the start of classes getting pushed back.

Residence halls are scheduled to open tomorrow at 10 a.m., but they will be open this afternoon to any students who need to travel today in order to make it to campus safely.

The first dining hall meal is scheduled for tomorrow for dinner.
