The Calvin women’s soccer team won both of their MIAA conference games this week by large margins, scoring a total of nine goals, only conceding one. They currently stand in third place, two points behind the leaders atop the MIAA with plenty of games left.

In the first game of the week, Calvin hosted Adrian who held an MIAA record of 4-1-0 going into the game. Ashton Hearn was ready for the challenge in goal as she conceded only one goal.

When asked about the pressure of opposing teams and expectations Hearn replied, “Every team we play brings their best when playing Calvin … we know that we have to play to compete every game.”

The Knights put any worries behind them with a shot off the foot of Kelly Koets that hit the post, and three corners provided by Sidney Kinney within the first five minutes.

The Knights created their first goal in the eighth minute as Kinney found Koets inside the box. The Knights finished the half with a 3-0 lead. Danielle Carter and Paige Capel provided the Knights with the other two goals.

Things got shaky in the first minute of the second half as Adrian narrowed the deficit with a goal from the top of the box. Capel helped the Knights respond immediately as she provided teammate Taylor TenHarmsel with a pass that was put away to regain the three goal lead.

Capel was hungry for more as she put away a 20 yard blast to give the Knights a four goal lead. The score stood, tallying a 5-1 victory for the Knights.

The Knights headed to a Saturday match at Kalamazoo to finish off the week. Capel was the main provider again, adding two more goals to her collection.

The Knights were able to score one goal in the first half on a toe-poke by Heidi Scholten in the eighth minute, but the Hornets fended off multiple other attacks by the Knights.

The Hornets’ fans surely believed their team could mount a comeback in the second half, but three goals and stellar defense from the Knights would prove otherwise.

Scholten had two assists, finding TenHarmsel and Capel, who later found each other for the final goal of the game. Hearn provided three saves that lead the Knights to a 4-0 victory.

The Knights are now 5-1-1 in conference play, with a 7-1-1 overall record. Their next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 2 against Olivet.
