Music department names John Varineau new conductor, professor

After a thorough search, Calvin College’s department of music has announced the hiring of John Varineau as Calvin’s newest full-time professor of music Tuesday afternoon.

Professor Varineau will also replace Robert Nordling as the conductor for the Calvin Orchestra and Calvin Community Symphony.

Varineau is well-known throughout the Grand Rapids area both as a conductor and teacher, and he is no stranger to Calvin College.

His most well-known role has been as an associate conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony, where he has conducted for 28 years.

Varineau has also taught clarinet at Calvin, Cornerstone University and Grand Rapids Community College. Last year, he appeared at Calvin’s annual January Series to speak on “The Uses, Misuses and Abuses of Music.”

Dr. Bert Polman, chair of the music department, said the hiring represents a definitive boost to the music department.

“We are delighted to have Mr. Varineau join our music faculty,” said Polman.

“Varineau brings with him a wealth of experience both as a performer and a teacher, and his modeling of excellent music-making will enrich the musical work we do with current students and alumni.”
