Calvin continued its slate of weekend activities this past Saturday with a campuswide capture the flag game. Put on by Nite Life, the winter version of Buck Fridays, the event started at 9:30 p.m. and lasted until midnight.

This event was started last year when a resident director asked John Britton, associate dean of student development, if it would be okay to put on this event. The resident director thought that Calvin’s campus would be the perfect host for such an event.

The game started at 9:30 and lasted until midnight. The dorms were split into two groups. The first group was Schultze-Eldersveld, Bolt-Heyns-Timmer, Rooks-Van-Dellen, Beets-Veenstra and off-campus students. The second team was Noordewier-Vanderwerp, Boer-Bennink and Kalsbeek-Huizenga-van Reken. They played a total of two games, with NVW, BB and KHvR winning both games.

“It was fun and really intense. There was a lot of running and it was really cool that it was in the dark,” said Elizabeth Mulcock from Noordewier.

Capture the flag wasn’t the only thing happening in the fieldhouse though. There was also live music provided by the band Subject to Change, consisting of current students from Calvin: Sarah Gabrielse on guitar and vocals, Jonathan McClung on the banjo, Mattie Koppendrayer on vocals and the tambourine, and John Lutgendorff on percussion. They sang some original songs and some by other well-known artists.

There were also s’mores and roasted marshmallows, hot apple cider and hot cocoa. Students could also decorate their own flag or picture frame as a craft using various scrap-booking papers and glitter. Various board games were also set up for people to play, such as Apples to Apples, chess, Twister and Jenga.

If none of this sounded interesting there was also Octoball, a dodge ball-like game played in an octagonal ring. Other events included open rock climbing, open basketball, volleyball and tennis.
