The women’s soccer team faced off against Olivet on Oct. 17. The Knights were victorious with a score of 3-0.

The game was scoreless through the first half but not for lack of opportunity — senior Liz Cancel, junior Kelly Koets and senior Francesca Smith kept the pressure on Olivet, and the Knights had 12 shots in the first half to the Comets to one.

In the 77th minute, freshman Paige Capel was able to connect off a great pass from freshman Taylor TenHarmsel. Just over a minute later, Capel was able to return the favor to TenHarmsel who took the shot at the top of the box, extending her streak to four goals in three games. With seven minutes left in the game, Capel set up junior Heidi Scholten at the top of the box and Scholten placed it into the top left corner of the net for Calvin’s third goal.

Calvin had 32 shots with 11 on goal. Olivet had 6 shots and only one on goal. Junior goalie Ashton Hearn made the save and earned the win for the Knights.

On Saturday, the Knights hosted Saint Mary’s and the game finished with a 1-1 tie.

The game was scoreless in the first half with Calvin having the 7-1 shot advantage. In the 80th minute, TenHarmsel connected with a header from a corner kick by Cancel. With 10 seconds left in the game, the Belles had a corner kick. The ball found the back of the net when the Knights were unable to clear it. In regulation, the Knights had a 18-6 shot advantage and were able to continue their dominance into overtime. Calvin outshot the Belles 5-3 but could not find the back of the net.

Calvin still sits atop the leaderboard in the MIAA, two points ahead of Hope who also played to a draw on Saturday against Adrian. Calvin plays again on Thursday at Kalamazoo.
