The men’s golf team left the fourth MIAA Jamboree of the season with a third place finish at 305 strokes this past Monday, Sept. 26. The tournament was hosted by Calvin, and the wind proved to be quite troubling for all schools involved.

Sophomore Sam Kuiper had the lowest round for Calvin with 73 strokes, which was good enough for fifth place overall. Two strokes behind Kuiper was first-year student Joshua Song with a round total of 75 strokes. Juniors Ben VanScoyk, John Van Noord and Matthew Lumbantoruan had round scores of 78, 79 and 83, respectively.

Hope College finished in first for the jamboree with 299 strokes, just four ahead of Adrian and six ahead of Calvin.

“Today was a tough day,” said head coach Brian Bolt. “The conditions were tough today, I thought we had some good scores. We have to now get ready for next week.”

The “one day at a time” mentality has been working for a team that is consistently finishing toward the top of the leaderboards. Currently, the team is in third place overall in the MIAA Conference standings. Hope is first in the standings at 1,167 strokes, 26 strokes ahead of Kalamazoo College in second place.

Other team members who participated in the jamboree but were unattached were sophomores Alec DeJonge (80 strokes) and Mitchell Knoor (82 strokes), and junior Alex Wagner (89 strokes).

Calvin only has one more MIAA event before the end of the fall season. The team will travel to Battle Creek Country Club in Battle Creek Oct. 7–8.
